Project Description

Power Logistics was contracted to deliver all site and show power for Radio 1 Big Weekend 2022, held at Coventry’s War Memorial Park, the last weekend in May. With the BBC and Festival Republic committed to reducing the environmental impact of the event, Power Logistics’ project management team was keen to demonstrate all the sustainable solutions at its disposal. Devising and implementing an advanced energy management strategy, Power Logistics reduced fuel consumption from the 2019 event by 41% even though its overall capacity was 25% bigger.

Power Logistics’ team was able to analyse the data gained in 2019 to inform decisions about the power solution for this year’s event. Decreasing the number of generator farms onsite and switching to battery technology for utilities, coupled with an advanced energy management strategy proved to be highly effective in reducing fuel usage across the site. This is even more impressive given that the implementation of Power Logistics’ bespoke power monitoring system in 2019 at the Middlesborough festival had already reduced fuel consumption and emissions by 20%.

Additional sustainable initiatives implemented at Radio 1 Big Weekend 2022 included the use of Green D+ HVO site wide; number of generators of site reduced from 30 to 17 compared to 2019, contributing to fuel savings but also a huge reduction in transport; solar powered fuel bowsers; LED site lighting and dusk to dawn sensors.
