Project Description

Power Logistics delivered site and show power to the Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies 2014 held at Celtic Park, Glasgow. Fully project managing the electrical requirements for the entire event we designed the site electrical plan; scoped, specified and sourced/ supplied all equipment and delivered the complete technical solution, including electricians and crew.

We secured the contract with long standing client and the ceremonies’ creator and producer Jack Morton Worldwide on the back of our reputation for delivering uninterrupted power for broadcast and major events of this size and scale. With a billion viewers watching the ceremony around the globe there was absolutely no margin for error whatsoever. We had previously delivered power solutions for Athens 2004, installed and maintained the power distribution for the equestrian events in Hong Kong for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. We were also responsible for the secondary power distribution for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics at London 2012.

The 15 generator sets, ranging from 250kVA to 550kVA, were supplied by John F Hunt from their local branch in Livingston. This not only kept transport costs to a minimum and reduced the event’s carbon footprint, it also ensured that there was a benefit to the local economy.

In addition, we also provided all cabling and distribution equipment and site lighting, including festoon, halogen lights, fluorescents and emergency exits. In addition to the power supplied to Jack Morton we also provided generator sets and electrical infrastructure to the broadcaster for the live transmission of the ceremonies.

The team were onsite from April 2014 when the build period for the ceremony began and remained onsite until September following the closing ceremony to complete the de-rig. We delivered 45 power feeds, ranging from 16amps to 200amps, for the lighting, audio, rigging, automation, LED screens, projection, pyrotechnics and special effects that were used to create the impressive visual spectacular that the ceremony is remembered for.
